The start of speech therapy

by Michele

We were told by our cleft team of doctors that we should start speech therapy as soon as their palate is repaired.  Even though they are young (they just turned 2) it is better to start as soon as possible with cleft babies so with their first surgery over a month ago, I started the process.  We met with the speech therapist yesterday along with another lady who is going to make sure there are no other developmental delays.  They are going to do some more paperwork with me next week and then I think we will be having a weekly meeting with the speech therapist until they are in school.  One more step in the long process of recovery for these girls.

I am a stay at home mom to two very active boys and soon we will bring home two Chinese twin girls with cleft lip and palate issues. I spend my day trying to be the best parent and wife I can be with God leading the way.

Hey Michele, Shawn and I are traveling to get our daughter on December 7th and we were wondering what hotels you stayed in? We will fly Seattle to Guangzhou then to Nanning to pick up Lily. Same situation…. she was in a foster home and then they transferred her to the orphanage. *sad* Let me know what you think.

    • Michele and I stayed at the Majestic Hotel (Mingyuan Xindu) while we were in Nanning. The hotel staff was very helpful and the breakfast buffet was really good. Our room was a little small and dated, but it was still perfectly fine. It was similar in size to a room in the States with two full size beds. So once we got two cribs in the room, it was pretty full. There were lots of small Chinese restaurants just down the road. We often ordered by pointing at the pictures on the menus. American restaurants like McDonald’s or KFC were kind of far away, so we tended to not use them much. There was a large supermarket directly across the street although it took me a while to find it since it was on the second and third floor above a large jewelry store and it never occurred to me to look for the escalator inside the jewelry store to find the supermarket. There were also a handful of other adoptive families staying at the hotel while we were there too.

We stayed at the Garden Hotel while we were in Guangzhou. This hotel had an awesome buffet and was far and away the fanciest hotel I have ever stayed at. We had a two room suite while we were there and had tons of room. There was lots of restaurants close by – both Chinese and American. There was also a small supermarket across the street (on the 4th floor of the shopping center I think). There were lots and lots of other adoptive families staying here. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Do you have a blog too?

  2. Sandy and Heidi? are so nice! I used to work with them! Have fun! (Maybe Sandy told you this but do you remember Kristin Kopp from our old Bible Study? That’s her mom.)
